Beans Phaseolus vulgaris cotyledon or bean half (n = 5) Specimens average 10.6 mm in length, 5.8 mm in width, and 2.0 mm in thickness.
Gourd Lagenaria siceraria rind fragment (n = 2) Fragments have a characteristic cross-section pattern with a layer of long, thin cells just below the epidermis.
Maize Zea mays cob fragment (n = 64) These portions of cobs, complete around the circumference, have: an average row number of 10.6 (range = 8-16 rows); an average cob segment length of 2.3 cm (range = 0.7-3.9 cm); slightly more cobs that are elliptical in cross section (n = 39) than are round (n = 25); and cupules with an average width of 5.8 mm (range = 3-8 mm), based on 11 separate cobs.
kernel (n = 262) Kernels average 8.2 mm in length, 7.9 mm in width, and 2.7 mm in thickness.
shank segment (n = 2) Shank segments support the ear. Each has 1 or 2 nodes, average 1.0 cm in length, and are no more than 1.0 cm in diameter.
meal cake fragment (n = 27) Meal cakes are composed of a ground-up organic material, very densely compacted, and somewhat layered. They measure up to 9 cm in length by 6 cm in width by 2.5 cm in thickness, and some are curved or slightly curved as if once pressed against the inside of a pot or molded with the hands. No recognizable seeds or seed coats remain. Considered likely to be a carbohydrate, such as maize.
Squash Cucurbita pepo seed (n = 10) Seeds exhibit the smooth margin and body characteristic of this species.
rind fragment (n = 1) The rind cross section pattern has isodiametric cells below the epidermis.
