Structure 4-S, subterranean kiva

CONSTRUCTION

Method and Sequence

Initially, a pit was probably excavated into native deposits; a bench was created by leaving a shelf of soil and/or placing fill behind the bench face; the bench face was constructed of masonry and presumably the upper lining wall was also masonry-lined; pilasters were constructed on top of the bench to support the roof; kiva was roofed based on the collapsed beam fragments and construction sediment in the fill; a prepared surface was constructed on top of an earlier use surface.
