Structure 6-S, aboveground kiva

CONSTRUCTION

Method and Sequence

None of the kiva walls were exposed during testing, however, this kiva is believed to have been built from the ground up, rather than dug into the earth, because the kiva is located on top of the canyon rim, near the cliff edge, where there is little to no soil accumulation on the slickrock; two surfaces, a hearth, and a deflector were constructed, and the kiva was roofed, based on the presence of collapsed roofing sediment in the structure fill (Stratum D on Map 192).

Length

350
Length of excavation unit at floor; inferred diameter=diameter of depression at modern ground surface.
Width
Height
125
No walls exposed; distance measured from Surface 1 (latest floor in kiva) to top of Stratum B; Stratum B is the uppermost deposit that contains some structural collapse from the kiva itself; kiva probably stood taller.

Method of Roof Support

No evidence.

Roof Description

Collapsed roofing sediment found in the structure fill (Stratum D on Map 192).
