Structure 1205, aboveground kiva

CONSTRUCTION

Method and Sequence

A block of rectangular, masonry-walled cells was constructed on bedrock east of, and adjacent to, the great tower complex. In one of these cells, a curved masonry bench face was constructed. The space between the bench face and the cell wall was then filled with construction sediiment up to the top of the bench face. Pilasters were then constructed which rested on the bench surface. The cell walls served as the upper lining walls in this structure, unlike most of the kivas west of this kiva. The roof was then constructed, and rested on the pilasters. The bedrock surface served as the floor; a few small patches of sediment may be remnants of a floor surface mostly destroyed during the Western State College field school excavations in 1931.

Roof Description

Pilaster roof support is inferred; there is no direct evidence of the roof, because the original fill was removed during the Western State College field school excavations in 1931.
