Structure 6-S, aboveground kiva

STRUCTURE DATING

Abandonment
Pottery sherds from floor and roof fall contexts date between A.D. 900 and 1300; a Mesa Verde Corrugated Gray ware sherd (A.D. 1100-1300) was the only formal type. These data suggest kiva was abandoned in late Pueblo III times.
Construction
Two noncutting tree-ring dates, A.D. 1204vv and 1161+vv, came from beams in the upper fill of this structure. These beams are believed to be have collapsed from the large tower (Structure 28) to the north, rather than from the roof of this kiva. The tower and this kiva are interpreted to be part of a larger architectural unit. Based on this association, this kiva may have also been constructed after A.D. 1204.
