Structure 508, masonry surface structure

STRUCTURE DATING

Abandonment
Association of Mesa Verde Black-on-white pottery indicates abandonment occurred sometime after A.D. 1180. Absence of secondary refuse in the fill of the structure suggests that the room was abandoned at the same time as the remainder of this kiva suite. The tree-ring cutting dates from associated Structure 501 (kiva) indicates abandonment of the kiva suite occurred sometime after A.D. 1252.
Construction
No means by which to date construction of this room, although it appears to have been built at the same time as Structure 507. The only tree-ring cutting dates from this kiva suite are from Structure 501 (kiva), and the preferred interpretation of those dates is that the kiva was built around A.D. 1252. Structure 508 was probably built within a few years of that.
Remodeling
No means by which to date the only possible remodeling noted in the room, which consisted of the construction of Surface 1, the main use floor (the earlier surface, Surface 2, might predate the construction of the room).
Reuse
None.
