Nonstructure 209, multiple study unit types
About this Nonstructure
General Location
Block 200, west edge of site, west-northwest of plaza.
Specific Location
East-southeast of, and adjacent to, Structures 208/212 (test pit butts up against southeast wall of structure).
Selection Criteria
Use
Used for the disposal of refuse; midden contains many and varied artifacts, indicating that it could be refuse from permanent habitation.
Abandonment
Abandoned as a midden when use or habitation of the kiva suite ended.
Postabandonment Process
Walls from adjacent structures collapsed onto the cultural deposits, burying the midden beneath stones and sediment; sediment was also deposited by wind and water.
Dating of Construction
The surface beneath this midden was unmodified bedrock and was thus not constructed.
Dating of Remodeling
Not applicable.
Dating of Abandonment
The unmodified bedrock surface was abandoned as a surface when the deposition of refuse began. This was after the adjacent tower (Structure 212) was built, which also rests on the bedrock surface, and was probably also after the kiva (Structure 208) was constructed (A.D. 1244 or later) within the tower.
Dating of Midden
Appears to be associated with the occupation of Kiva Suite 208. Lowermost stratum of refuse contains a substantial quantity of ash. The only hearth found in this kiva suite is the hearth in Structure 208 (kiva); thus, the ash in this midden probably resulted from use of the hearth in that structure. The suite was probably abandoned sometime after A.D. 1267. This midden was probably used until this kiva suite was abandoned, sometime after that year.
Dating of Reuse
Neither the bedrock surface nor the midden was reused.
