General description
Basin-shaped depression containing burned sediment and ash; possibly originally associated with the inferred upper-story floor (structure number not assigned), but collapsed into room below.
Use history
Informal pit inferred to have been used to contain fire(s), possibly for heat, light, and/or cooking. It may have been associated with an inferred upper-story floor that fell into the room below (no associated structure number or surface number was assigned to the possible upper story).
Associated features
None.
Excavation procedure
Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the "Field Data: Provenience Data" query in the multisite research database. The portion of the feature exposed in the test unit was designated Segment 1 and was excavated in a single stratum.
Portion excavated
Portion exposed in test unit---approximately half the feature?.
Horizontal location
Center of room, along the east edge of Segment 1 (the test pit in room).
Vertical location
Located in the middle of Stratum 3 of Room 1513; inferred in field to perhaps have originally been located on the floor of an inferred upper story (structure number not assigned).
Construction
Unknown, but burned sandstone slab fragments may have been part of feature.
Remodeling/ modification
Unknown
Thermal alteration
Yes. Oxidized sediment, burned sandstone pieces, and oxidized "adobe."
Degree of preservation
Not in original position; broken up and distorted from fall (inferred).
