Structure 1-S, subterranean kiva
About this Structure
General Location
Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom.
Specific Location
West of Nonstructure 1-N and north of Nonstructure 4-N.
Interpretive Type
Not assigned.
Structure Use
Limited data; one floor pit feature; floor artifacts were scarce; roof fall artifacts (complete cores, complete peckingstones, a complete projectile point, a complete mano, a complete maul, and an incomplete polishingstone) may have once rested on the roof or were stored in the ceiling; if this was the case, these tools suggest a variety of domestic activities took place during the final use of this area.
Dating
Abandonment
One complete bone tube left on kiva floor and some complete or almost complete items may have been left on or in the kiva roof; roof appears to have been dismantled because no timbers were encountered in the structure fill; the near absence of floor artifacts and roof timbers suggests a planned abandonment or that items were salvaged by others after structure was no longer in use; some refuse may have been discarded in the kiva after the roof was dismantled.
Postabandonment
Structure filled with wall fall from roomblock to the north and natural deposits.
