Structure 405, subterranean kiva
About this Structure
General Location
In a flat area at the base of the slope, north of butte.
Specific Location
Few meters west of Structure 406.
Interpretive Type
Living room.
Structure Use
Use of structure inferred to be consistent with other small kivas of this time period--probably some combination of domestic and ritual uses. Few artifacts left on floor--a metate was left leaning against the deflector. The presence of this artifact suggests that food processing or meal preparation occurred in the structure.

Abandonment
Although no human remains were recovered in the 2 x 1 unit excavated in this kiva, the partly burned roof, missing cribbing beams, and absence of trash in the kiva fill indicate that this structure was abandoned at the same time and in the same way that most other structures on the site were abandoned--as a result of an attack that caused the deaths of many villagers and that ended the occupation of the village.
Postabandonment
Natural collapse and filling of the kiva depression.
