Structure 1205, aboveground kiva

About this Structure

General Location

In the great tower complex.

Specific Location

14 m east of the great tower bi-wall structure.

Interpretive Type

Structure Use

Few data on which to base an interpretation, other than the kiva-style architecture. No artifacts are thought to have been in situ. Presence of niches in the bench face, upper lining wall, and in the deflector suggest some ritual use, but do not preclude domestic use. A possible "pass-through" was defined in the east upper lining wall (see structure plan map). This feature would have provided mutual access between this structure and Structure 1208, and would indicate use by one residential group.

Abandonment

Prior excavation destroyed evidence of abandonment events.

Postabandonment

Structure was excavated and backfilled in 1931 by Western State College field school.
