Structure 106, masonry surface structure

About this Structure

General Location

Block 100, north end of site, just west of drainage.

Specific Location

Below Arbitrary Unit 112, in east "wing" of Block 100. North-northwest of, and adjacent to, Structure 102; between Structures 105 and 107.

Interpretive Type

Storage room.

Structure Use

No floor artifacts were found in this room. The absence of features and the very small size of the structure suggests that the room was used for storage. Access was apparently through a hatchway in the roof.

Abandonment

The roof was not burned. The absence of artifacts on the floor suggests that the room was cleaned out after it ceased being used and before the roof collapsed. The absence of refuse in the fill suggests that the room was abandoned when this area of Block 100 was abandoned. Evidence of the circumstances of this abandonment was found in the condition and disposition of human remains found in adjacent structures (Structures 101, 102, 105, 107, 116, and 118). There is no evidence to indicate that any of the individuals represented were formally buried. These circumstances of abandonment suggest that this structure and this area of Block 100 were abandoned as a result of a violent event in which at least some of the residents of these structures were killed and not formally buried.

Postabandonment

The upper portions of the walls collapsed naturally.
