Structure 1203, masonry surface structure

About this Structure

General Location

Block 1200, southeast quadrant of site, on cliff edge.

Specific Location

Northwest corner of excavated portion of Block 1200, spanning a natural crack in the bedrock at the edge of the cliff.

Interpretive Type

Tower.

Structure Use

Few data on which to base an interpretation of use. No artifacts were recorded as being in contact with the floor. Entry was inferred to have been through a natural crevice in the floor between the cliff edge and boulders on which the walls of the structure rested. It is possible that, if there are structures below the crevice entry, this tower might have been associated with those structures rather than with Kiva Suite 1206.

Abandonment

The presence of some secondary refuse in the fill of the entry crevice (Feature 1) and in the lower fill of the structure suggests that this tower was abandoned in a leisurely manner before the Kiva Suite 1206 was abandoned.

Postabandonment

Some refuse was deposited into the structure probably before the roof collapsed, possibly while the roof was in the process of collapsing and also possibly after the roof had collapsed. The upper walls of the strucuture collapsed, and a portion of the west wall collapsed, probably westward down the slope. Additional sediment was also deposited.
