Structure 508, masonry surface structure
About this Structure
General Location
Block 500, west of drainage; borders southwest end of plaza.
Specific Location
Northwest corner of courtyard (Nonstructure 513), in front row of roomblock, adjacent to (west of) Structure 507. South and west walls "straddle" large boulder.
Interpretive Type
Storage room.
Structure Use
This room might have been a storage room. The room was probably not used for habitation, because athough there is evidence that a fire was built in the central portion of the room, this evidence is on an earlier surface that appears to predate the room. Also, a boulder surface occupies nearly one-half of this small room, the remaining floor surface slopes, and the doorway has a raised sill. Several usable vessels and a few tools were found on the floor and/or in roof fall. Thus, the evidence suggests that the room was used for storage, although other uses are also possible. The doorway in the south wall provided mutual access between this room and the courtyard.

Abandonment
Several usable vessels and tools were found in the roof fall and/or on the floor of this room. Thus, several usable items were neither taken by the residents nor scavenged by others. Also, there was no secondary refuse in the room fill, suggesting that abandonment of this structure and the kiva suite occurred at the same time the village was abandoned. Abandonment of the suite could have followed a ritual interment in Structure 501 (kiva), could have resulted from a warfare event, or from some other, unknown cause.
Postabandonment
Roof and upper walls collapsed naturally.
