Attention educators (or friends of educators): Crow Canyon has a new set of curriculum to help students understand the life and history of ancestral Pueblo people in the Four Corners area.

The Shared Historical Landscapes Project—which brought together Crow Canyon, school districts, and several government and not-for-profit organizations—was created to help develop a curriculum for K-12 students focused on the unique places, cultures, and histories of southwest Colorado.

And now the first portion of that curriculum is available for free on the Crow Canyon website.

The Mesa Verde National Park Field Trip lessons, which are designed for grades 3-8, are designed to supplement a field trip to the national park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) with classroom materials and a project website where teachers and students can access lessons and supporting materials, as well as share the results of their work with other schools and educators.

The project came about because although Mesa Verde National Park and southwest Colorado attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, many local schoolchildren have grown up without ever having visited the park or other historical sites in the region. In addition, many students have never been exposed to the rich history or culture of the Pueblo people who have called the area home for more than 1,000 years.

The goal of the project is to change that lack of understanding and appreciation for the history and cultures of southwest Colorado. The lessons are grounded in interdisciplinary, 21st-century skills and Colorado State Standards and use best practices in place-based education, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) education, experiential learning, and online learning.

The Shared Historical Landscapes Project was made possible through a grant from History Colorado State Historical Fund.
