Crow Canyon Offers Trip of a Lifetime with Wild Food Adventure

Wild Food

The Cultural Explorations program at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is designed to give participants a travel experience like no other. But even among this year's stellar lineup of travel seminars, the Wild Food Adventure stands out as a rare opportunity to learn from some of the best chefs in the American Southwest today.

Wild Food Adventure is a six-day travel seminar focused around the Santa Fe area and the pueblos of northern New Mexico. Participants on the program will have the opportunity to learn about wild edible plants and herbs with scholars who will teach a variety of ways to eat healthy while connecting with the Southwest landscape and culture. Highlights include walking tours in the spectacular Sangre de Cristo mountains of northern New Mexico to identify foraged foods with experts, hands-on cooking lessons with native chefs, and rare insights and lessons about the traditions and ritual practices of the Pueblo people.

The scholars for the Wild Food Adventure include Karlos Baca (Diné, Tewa, Nuche), Lois Ellen Frank, Ph.D. (Kiowa), Walter Whitewater (Diné), Norma and Hutch Naranjo (Tewa), Colin Shane, and Katrina Blair.

"This trip is an excellent introduction to the native foods movement," said Crow Canyon Cultural Explorations Coordinator Kate Thompson. "The group of scholars on this trip are some of the best chefs in the Southwest, and this is a great opportunity to learn about wild and foraged foods in a setting like no other."

In addition to the once-in-a-lifetime hands-on instruction in the kitchen, participants will have the opportunity to witness Feast Day ceremonies at the Picuris Pueblo, including dances and a traditional pole climb.

Wild Food Adventure runs from August 6 to 11. For more information on how you can be a part of this incredible Cultural Explorations opportunity, click here or call (800) 422-8975, ext. 457.
