Crow Canyon Staff Present at the 91st Society for American Archaeology Annual Meeting

The Society for American Archaeology Annual Meeting is always a highlight for Crow Canyon staff—and this year is no exception. Our team and associates will be actively contributing through oral presentations, posters, and panel discussions spanning more than a dozen topics, from painted pottery design to data sovereignty.

We participate in the SAA conference not only to share our work, but to listen, learn, and engage with conversations shaping the future of archaeology.

Here are the Crow Canyon contributors and their topics:

Jonathan Dombrosky (with Weronika Tomczyk) will present their paper, “The Reach of Applied Zooarchaeology: A Citation-Based Tribute to Lee Lyman.”

Jonathan Dombrosky and Reuven Sinensky (with Lydia Evans, Emily Reed, and Stefania Wilks) will present their paper, “Exploratory Macrobotanical and Microfaunal Analysis of Turkey Penning at the Haynie Site (5MT1905).”

Reuven Sinensky and Jonathan Dombrosky (with Stewart B. Koyiyumptewa) will present their paper, “Reassessing Environmental Causes of 13th-Century Migration in the Northern U.S. Southwest: Hopi Perspectives and Integrated Plant-Animal Evidence.”

Jamie Merewether and Jonathan Dombrosky(with Ben Bellorado, Daniel Hampson, Lori Stephens-Reed, and Michelle Turner) will present their paper, “Reconnecting the Ancestral Pueblo World through Painted Pottery Design: Restyling Mancos Black-on-White Analysis Typologies Across the Mesa Verde Region.”

Susan Ryan (with Neha Gupta, Sarah Kansa, Desiree Martinez, and Christopher Nicholson) will present their paper, “Respectful and Equitable Approaches to Research and Data Management: Applying C.A.R.E. Principles to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center’s Legacy Data.”

Katie Williams (with Garet Couch) will present their paper, “Spatial Data and Indigenous Data Sovereignty.”

Grant Coffey and Reuven Sinensky (with Stewart B. Koyiyumptewa, Paul Ermigiotti, and Mark Varien) will present their paper, “The Pueblo Farming Project: A Long-Term, Collaborative Project of the Hopi Tribe and The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center.”

Dave Satterwhite and Jeremy Grundvig (with Chris Alger and Kathleen Isaacson) will present their paper, “Can We Infer the Availability of Prehistoric Water? Construction Water Demand at the Haynie Site, Southwest Colorado.”

Rebecca Renteria (with Lyle Balenquah and Devin Kewanyama) will present their paper, “The Taawa’ki Restoration Project: A Practice in Community-Rooted Work, Collaboration, and Reconciliation.”

Steve Copeland (with Mona Charles) will present their poster, “Finding Middle Ground: Electrical Resistance Surveys at a Chacoan Great House in Southwest Colorado.”

Jonathan Dombrosky (with Chelsea Betts. and Steve Wolverton) will present their poster, “Detection of Harvest Pressure in the Archaeological Record through Body Size Comparison of Mule Deer and White-Tailed Deer.”

Grant Coffey (with Abigail De Leon, Wyatt Linggi, and Connor Malinger) will present their poster, “Survey of the Knuckles Preserve, Cahone, Colorado.”

Reuven Sinensky (with Gregson Schachner, Kirk Anderson, Jonathan Hardes, Joel Nicholas, Octavius Seowtewa, and Maren Hopkins) will present their poster, “Collaborative Research Planning for the Care of a Challenging Ancestral Landscape in Petrified Forest National Park.”

Daniel Hampson will present two posters, “New Eyes on Kin Ya’a: A Chacoan Great House Community,” and “The Tzaman Acropolis Research Project at La Milpa, Belize: Year One.”

Reuven Sinensky and Jonathan Dombrosky organized a session titled “Reintegrating Zooarchaeology and Paleoethnobotany: New Collaborations, Questions, Methods, and Paradigms.”

Katie Williams organized a session titled, “Archaeology and Indigenous Data Sovereignty.”

Susan Ryan will participate on a panel comprised of F.A.I.R.+C.A.R.E. Cultural Heritage Network members and will discuss F.A.I.R.+C.A.R.E. practices in archaeology.

Rebecca Renteria will participate on a panel comprised of past and present SAA Board Members and current Committee on Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion on cultivating diversity and inclusion in SAA leadership.

Reuven Sinensky is a discussant in the forum, “Growing Reference Collections and Connections in Archaeobotany.” He also organized the following special events: “Making a Mission Statement for the Archaeobotany Interest Group,” “Archaeobotany Interest Group Meeting,” and “Archaeobotany Interest Group Mentorship Brown-Bag Lunch.”

Rebecca Renteria will organize a special event “Community Engaged Heritage Practices Interest Group Meeting.”
