Gifts of Appreciated Stock
A gift of stock can be a tax-smart way to support Crow Canyon’s archaeological research, public education programs, and collaborations with Indigenous partners. Giving appreciated stock that you’ve owned for more than a year could lower your capital gains liability on the transfer and you may be able to claim a charitable tax deduction as well.
Instructions for initiating a transfer of stock to Crow Canyon’s E-trade account:
The donor, with the assistance of their broker/brokerage, will complete a Letter of Authorization (LOA) that will include the basics such as their name and account number, gift instructions (which security they are gifting; number of shares OR market value), and other necessary details.

IRA Charitable Gifts
In 2025, Individuals aged 70-1/2 and older can distribute up to $108,000 from their IRAs directly to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center and other charities without counting the distribution as income.
If you are 70½ or older and have an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), you are eligible to make a gift from your IRA to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. These gifts, called Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), and your taxable income is lowered by the amount of your qualified charitable distribution (QCD). Gifts made via QCD must be completed before December 31 to be eligible in the current tax year.
Please consider:
-
- You must be an IRA owner and be at least age 70½.
- Your QCD must be made directly from your IRA custodian to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center on your behalf. Each financial institution has its own process for initiating a qualified charitable distribution. Funds that are withdrawn by you and then contributed do not qualify.
- Gifts generally come directly from your IRA account to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in the form of a check, but some IRA holders may write a check to the organization from their IRA checkbook.
- The gift may come from a Traditional or a Roth IRA; special exclusions may apply to other types of IRA accounts.
- Although there is no tax deduction, there is NO income tax on the withdrawal when it comes directly to Crow Canyon.
- Per IRS regulations, QCDs cannot be made to a donor advised fund (DAF).
- Paperwork that accompanies your gift to Crow Canyon should provide your name and address.
Crow Canyon Archaeological Center’s Federal Tax ID is 84-0631786.

Donor Advised Funds
A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is an account you establish at an approved 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity called a Sponsoring Organization or DAF Sponsor. The most common Sponsoring Organizations are likely to be community foundations or charitable divisions of financial service providers such as Fidelity or Schwab.
A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is an account that you can use to organize your charitable giving. Because DAFs allow donors to receive any tax benefits for their gift up front, any charity/charities that receive your DAF gift/grant will not provide you with a tax receipt.
According to FreeWill.com, DAFs provide donors with a flexible way to give to causes they care about and they are a tax-savvy method for setting aside money specifically for that purpose. Once your fund is established, you can recommend grants to your favorite eligible charities, locally or globally.
Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is an IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) charity and is eligible to receive DAF grants and gifts.
