Guided by Reyna Banteah (Zuni) of Ts’uyya Farm, Katrina Blair of Turtle Lake Refuge, and Crow Canyon’s own Rebecca Renteria, you’ll embark on a field trip into the San Juan Mountains while learning about past and present ecosystems, then return to the high desert to create and sample delectable treats at Crow Canyon’s campus near Cortez, CO. While delectable trail snacks will be provided by Turtle Lake Refuge and food sampling is an activity of the program, you may consider bringing supplemental items depending on your interest and tastes.
Physical activity level is moderate for our morning walk in the mountains. You need to be able to stroll along maintained trails through forests and meadows at elevations ranging between 9,000 to 10,000 feet. Expect our walk to be under 2.5-miles roundtrip, as we will be stopping often to identify plants and have short discussions. We will not be hiking uphill for any distance, but the trail may wind through undulating terrain. Staff will be available for assistance should we encounter any obstacles such as small stream crossings or short rocky uphill sections. Walking sticks can be helpful for anyone desiring added support. If you have any questions about your capability for this program, please consult your physician.
