Reconciliation at Fort Lewis College with Matthew Schaeffer

Fort Lewis College, formerly a Federal Indian Boarding School, is committed to an ongoing reconciliation process that acknowledges its historical impact and honors its responsibilities to Indigenous communities, students, faculty, and staff. This work requires intentional focus, healing, and sustained action and it is essential to our shared future.

In this presentation Matthew Schaeffer discusses the historical realities of Fort Lewis Indian Boarding School and Fort Lewis College. Schaeffer will discuss the intergenerational impacts of Federal Indian Boarding School, including the specific impacts of Fort Lewis Indian Boarding School and the ways these histories inform Fort Lewis College's current Reconciliation process. Through this presentation, Schaeffer aims to share knowledge with our local community so that we may cultivate a shared responsibility to honor and support Indigenous communities.
