Creating your own weaving can be intimidating, but with 5th generation master weavers by your side, you will be able to finish your own design by the end of the week. Barbara Jean Teller Ornelas and Lynda Teller Pete will share their stories, techniques, and history of the art with you.

Barbara Teller Ornelas

Barbara Teller Ornelas and Lynda Teller Pete are 5th-generation master Navajo weavers, who specialize in the Two Grey Hills style. This style is identified primarily by a double-diamond, intricate geometric design. Barbara and Lynda learned to weave when they were very young. They were raised at the Two Grey Hills Trading Post in New Mexico, where their father, Sam Teller, worked. Their mother, Ruth, demonstrated weaving at the trading post, attracting a constant flow of tourists. They have perfected their own craft over the years and are now two of the best in the world.

All accommodation reservations are made by Crow Canyon Archaeological Canyon as part of your program. Here is a sneak peek into where you will be staying throughout the trip:

Best Western Plus Gallup - Located in the Heart of Gallup, this hotel is the perfect location for exploring the city. It is located within walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and parks. Amenities include WiFi, complimentary breakfast, a gym, indoor pool, and more.


There is no experience required for this program. All tools will be provided to you and your scholar and guides will assist you in the creation of your weaving project. There is minimal hiking involved in the program. You should be comfortable with sitting in a chair for long periods of time while you work.


The elevation level for this program is 6,500 feet. We recommend ramping up your exercise regime prior to arrival or arriving a day or two early to acclimate, especially if coming from sea level. If you have any questions, please contact your physician.

Remote Facilities?

Elements of this trip include visits to rural areas where amenities may be limited for a period of time, but we will take advantage of facilities when we can.

Cultural Sensitivity?

This program includes visits to Navajo communities. The Navajo Nation is a sovereign government and establishes its own rules for visitors. Guidelines will be provided to help you prepare for this journey. Please be respectful of any and all rules during the program. The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center practices "visiting with respect" with each and every home and family. There may be instances where you are invited into a home or studio. Please know that these can range from very simple accommodations (i.e. toilet facilities may be an outhouse) to those with modern facilities. Alcohol is prohibited on tribal lands.

Hands-On Work?

This workshop is designed as a cultural immersion opportunity that provides you with insights into traditional weaving techniques and contemporary Navajo lifeways. Weaving activities are performed on a traditional upright loom with students seated in a chair. You may certainly sit on the floor if you would like to, but it is not a requirement. All weaving tools and materials will be supplied to create your masterpiece, and you will have the option to purchase your loom, tools, and supplies.

Should I get travel insurance?

Yes, we highly recommend that all of our program participants purchase some type of travel insurance to help you protect your purchase against any unforeseen circumstances. When you don’t purchase travel insurance, you risk losing your full deposit and any other payments that you have made toward the trip. Crow Canyon does not endorse any particular travel insurance agency, but we recommend visiting InsureMyTrip.com (link) as a starting point. At the least, Crow Canyon recommends purchasing cancellation, evacuation, and/or baggage insurance.

If I cancel, will I get my deposit back?

If you cancel before 90 days prior to the start of the program, you can get a refund equal to 50% of your deposit. Instead of a refund, you could transfer your deposit to another program through 2020 or turn your deposit into a tax-deductible donation. If you cancel after 90 days prior to the program, you forfeit all payments and your deposit.
