Dive Into Decades of Data!

Posted April 21, 2024

DID YOU KNOW CROW CANYON BUILT AND MAINTAINS ONE OF THE LARGEST ARCHAEOLOGICAL DATABASES IN NORTH AMERICA?

For forty years, you have helped us each step of the way in our shared archaeological journey—from the assessment and excavation of those very first research sites (like Sand Canyon and Duckfoot), to artifact collection and the meticulous work of recording and analyzing data, to the publication of research studies and reports.

“The research database includes four decades of data collected from multiple archaeological sites in the Mesa Verde region. It is one of Crow Canyon’s most significant and impactful legacies.”— Dr. Susan Ryan, Executive Vice President of the Research Institute at Crow Canyon

We’re asking for your help to make information from our research more broadly available to descendant community members, researchers, students, teachers, and the public. Due to the intricacy of the research database, this will be a multi-year project. Working with a talented local website designer, the initial goal is to improve the user experience when accessing information in the database.

“Making data available to researchers, descendant community members, and the public allows us to examine detailed knowledge about our shared humanity that generates cultural understanding, empathy, and respect.”— Dr. Susan Ryan

For some students, this may be their first experience using authentic archaeological data to answer a question or delve further into a subject that interests them. We also want citizen scientists to be able to seek answers contained in major research studies. With multiple members of our wider community asking new questions of our data, the potential for new understanding is unlimited. Your gift in support of an improved database will make this possible.

“Right now, it’s like using a land line instead of the newest cell phone. You can make it work, but it’s clunky.”— Dr. Jonathan Dombrosky, Crow Canyon’s Environmental Archaeologist who uses the database extensively
